SSMS Engages Students Through The Wizard of Oz

Wizard of Oz

Columbiana South Side Middle School teachers gave their 7th and 8th grade students a Halloween treat on Friday, October 29th. While the younger students enjoyed classroom parties, the older kids viewed the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz as their teachers paraded through the day dressed as characters from the Academy Award winner. This was a first viewing for many students who also answered detail-demanding trivia questions during and after the show. (The Scarecrow gets a diploma in what subject? Answer: Thinkology).  In the afternoon, teens designed and calculated the number of bricks for a yellow brick road,  wrote articles for the Oz Times and re-cast characters with modern-day actors.  Students and teachers alike remembered that Oz is a place for all young at heart.

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either academically superior or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement to high levels. In addition to being honored at a ceremony in Washington, DC, where each school receives a plaque and flag signifying their status, our school will serve as a model for other schools throughout the nation.

Columbiana High School was in the top 10% of the state of Ohio and the staff and community should be very proud of this recognition.
