CHS Band (8-12) Qualified to State Adjudication
On Saturday, March 14 - the Columbiana High School Band (Grades 8-12) competed in the Ohio Music Education Association District 5 Large Group Adjudication at Howland High School.
Performing in Class C, the band performed the following literature:
First We Dream, Erik Morales
Sparks, Brian Balmages
The Great Rubber Chicken Galop, Randall Standridge
Large Group Adjudication is comprised of two major components. The first, the “floor” performance where the band is evaluated on a standards-based performance rubric (attached below) by three adjudicators. This year the band earned the following:
Judge One: Rating of II, Excellent
Judge Two: Rating of II, Excellent
Judge Three: Rating of I, Superior
The second component is in sight-reading. This element affords the band a total of 8 minutes to review a piece of music that the director and students have never seen before. The first 4 minutes is the study session, the second 4 minutes is the teaching segment. During the full 8 minutes the students are not permitted to play their instruments. Once the 8 minutes expires, we then perform the music for evaluation by a sight-reading adjudicator. The band earned the following:
Sight-Reading Judge: Rating of I, Superior.
The final rating for Adjudicated Events is based upon the total ratings of each component. This year, the band earned an overall rating of I, Superior qualifying the State Adjudicated Event.
The State Adjudication is schedule for either the end of April or the first weekend in May. Our hope is that we can register for the first weekend in May.
